Suzanne Clothier

In this first episode of this series, I am joined by Kate Sala to revisit a discussion with Suzanne Clothier from the Aggression and Dogs Conference 2022. Suzanne shares her wisdom on understanding and training dogs while emphasizing the importance of recognizing each dog as an individual with unique needs. We explore practical techniques, the concept of 'happy hostages,' and the emotional and behavioral complexities of living with dogs. This new format allows us to delve deeper into these themes and reflect on what it truly means to live harmoniously with our canine companions.

In the second episode, originally from Series One: Health and Wellbeing, we explore the research on bite risks, with Dr. Sara Owczarczak-Garstecka the experiences of postal workers, and the challenges faced by dog owners. We discuss the lasting impacts on families and communities, and the social narratives surrounding aggressive behaviors in dogs. We'll also hear from dog trainer Kate La Sala from Rescued by Training, about hands-on training perspectives and the importance of clear communication.

Dr. Clive Wynne

In this third episode, I revisit my 2022 conversation with psychologist and author Dr. Clive Wynne, whose book Dog Is Love explores the profound emotional connection between dogs and humans. In part one, I reflect on Clive's insights into affection, training ethics, and what makes dogs so uniquely successful in our world. In part two, I’m joined by Clive and dog trainer Kate LaSala for a thoughtful, dynamic discussion that dives even deeper into the science and sentiment behind the dog-human bond. Together, we explore the challenges of aversive tools, the power of reciprocity, and how embracing dogs as emotionally rich individuals reshapes how we live alongside them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnpbDY8p5pQ

We wrap up part one of the Dog's Days of Summer series by delving into the complex world of free-living dogs in India with canine ethologist Sindhoor Pangal. We discuss behavior, social structures, and the ethical implications of these animals' lives. Sindhoor joins Kate and I to to address the recent controversial Supreme Court order in New Delhi, shedding light on the public protests and what they signify for the relationship between humans and dogs. The episode also touches on broader themes of human-animal relationships, mutual respect, and the complexity of living alongside free-living animals.
